PW ENews September 2014

 A Word from Our Moderator

We usually think of spring as the season of renewal, but fall brings us some new beginnings of its own. Our church family will kick off a new year of activities this Sunday and PW will be coming right along, with our Fall Gathering on Tuesday night and three new Bible studies starting this month. The PW CT has been working this summer to make plans for the year. We have already settled on dates and location for our annual retreat (March in the GA mountains) and will get sign-ups going shortly. We plan to have more of our casual fellowship gatherings this year, maybe incorporating some mission-related craft projects with them. The Book Club has already had its first meeting and has a fresh lineup of books to read and discuss.

There’s something for everyone – all we need is you!

Your Sister in Christ,

Nancy Thompson

 Bible Studies for 2014-2015

There will be three different organized Bible studies offered for women this year. Two of them will meet in the traditional PW Circle format of monthly meetings either on Tuesday evenings or Wednesday mornings. However, the Wednesday morning (Ruth Circle) group has decided to try a different study this year instead of the Horizons Bible study that is published by PW at the PCUSA level.

Rebekah Circle – Tuesday Nights, 3rd week of each month beginning 9/16

Circle Leader: Barbara Christopher ( )

Horizons PW Bible Study: Reconciling Paul – A Contemporary Study of 2 Corinthians

“Paul, like us, wrestled with and questioned his faith as he tried to live as authentically as possible in an ancient world that was also in the midst of a great deal of change…This study invites us all to ask whether or not we understood Paul’s writings clearly in the past and to read his letter afresh in light of the issues we face in our time. Concepts of shared partnership, power in weakness, healing, reconciliation, love, and a new apostolate all figure prominently in (author) Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty’s reading of Paul. She hopes that you will find your own voices among the larger community of interpreters as we discern together the meaning of these ancient passages for the world in which we live today.”

Ruth Circle – Wednesday Morning, 3rd week of each month beginning 9/17

Circle Leader: Marline Kelly ( )

Fast Track: Genesis to Revelation, The Quickest Way to Understand the Bible

by Chad Hovind

This study takes us through the entire bible in 8 sessions using a 30-minute DVD presentation, group discussion after the video, and elective short reading material to review at home. It will cover Genesis to Revelation in a comprehensive yet streamlined presentation of the biblical narrative. This might be a study in contrasts for those who participated in The Year of the Bible in 2013. Here are the session topics in order of study:

  1. The Beginning: Trust Me (Genesis-Exodus)
  2. The Conquests: Don’t Give Up (Exodus-1 Samuel)
  3. The Monarchs: Stop Running and Return to Me (1 Samuel-1 Kings)
  4. The Predictions: Keep God First (2 Kings-Malachi)
  5. The Doubts: Facing Adversity (Job, Ruth, Lamentations, Psalms)
  6. The Christ: God’s Greatest Gift (Matthew-John)
  7. The Church: A new Mission (Acts-Thessalonians)
  8. The End: Never Give Up (Revelation, Daniel, Matthew 24)

The JOY Bible Study group – learning about Jesus, Others, Yourself – 2nd and 4th Wednesday Mornings beginning 9/10

Here and Now…There and Then: A Lecture Series on Revelation by Beth Moore

Group Leader: Sherri Rogers ( )

“(This) is a DVD lecture series on the book of Revelation. Beth presents many points of view, allowing women to decide for themselves when the interpretation varies among scholars. She teaches that God is as specific about what he DOES reveal as He is about what HE does NOT reveal.”

Each DVD session is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and the group will discuss the video contents after watching.

PW Missions

We are so excited this year to look forward toward a year of study, fellowship and giving. Our Missions calendar will look a little different this year, with a directed focus on helping the children at Thornwell Home for Children. Thornwell was founded in 1875 by Presbyterian minister, William Jacobs, with the goals of “providing loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children and offer them hope for a successful future by providing a loving family environment, educational support and teaching self-advocacy”. These children’s homes are in cottages where they live with other children their age. Each month we will identify a cottage and collect items specifically for their needs. Please join us at the Fall Gathering to learn more about this amazing place! We will continue to support the traditional PW programs of clergy appreciation, Cookies with Santa, Open Door sandwiches and Valentines, as well as our national PW collections.

For September we will be collecting school supplies and new/slightly used clothing for the elementary aged children (K-6th grade) in Anita-Nancy, Ferguson and Stewart cottages. These items can be left in the Mission Box in the Fireside Room throughout the month.

Looking ahead to October we will also be celebrating Clergy Appreciation. Circles will treat our clergy and staff to lunch at an area restaurant. A donation envelope will be available at the September and October Circle meetings and also in the PW box in the workroom.

Looking forward to a great year of giving!

PW Retreat – Save the dates!

The annual PW retreat will be held the weekend of March 20-22, 2015, in Hiawassee, Georgia, on the shores of Lake Chatuge, at the Lodge at Lake Chatuge. Please make plans now to join us for this fun weekend of fellowship and laughing and learning.
