September 2011 PW News
Dear Women of Northminster,
I hope everyone has had a great summer and happy to get back in a routine. If you are not currently involved in Presbyterian Women, please consider all the opportunities that PW offers. You can feel free to participate in any way that fits your schedule. Our Annual Fall Gathering dinner will kick off the year on September 13th at NPC. This is a great opportunity to fellowship and to meet the women of the church. Also, please plan to save the date for the PW Retreat April 20th - 22nd, 2012. We had a great time this past year and are headed back to North Georgia to The Dillard House for a fun weekend retreat. Our speaker will be Lyndsay Slocum, Associate Pastor of Children's Ministries at Roswell Presbyterian. More details to follow.
Your Sister in Christ,

Missions
September Mission
We are going to coordinate our September mission with other groups in the church and collect Food and Coats for North Fulton Community Charities. NFCC is a leader in North Fulton offering assistance to over 5,000 families annually. In 2010 food was distributed over 22,238 times and over 2000 families utilized clothing vouchers. Their needs are great and will appreciate any donations we can supply.
Please place donations in the Blue Box in the Fireside Room during the entire month of September.
Looking Ahead: October Mission
Our October Mission will be the celebration of Clergy Appreciation. Circles will provide lunch and/or gifts for the clergy and staff. Sign-up sheets and the donation envelope will be available at the September Circle meetings. There will also be an envelope in the PW box in the workroom. Donations collected during September will be used to purchase gift cards for both Clergy and Staff. Cards and notes of appreciation will accompany the gift cards when they are presented during the luncheon.

August Book Review
Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende
Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Tete is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage. Though her childhood is one of brutality and fear, Tete finds solace in the traditional rhythms of African drums and in the voodoo loas she discovers through her fellow slaves.
When twenty-year-old Toulouse Valmorain arrives on the island in 1770, it's with powdered wigs in his baggage and dreams of financial success in his mind. But running his father's plantation is neither glamorous nor easy. It will be eight years before he brings home a bride—but marriage, too, proves more difficult than he imagined. And Valmorain remains dependent on the services of his teenaged slave.
Spanning four decades, Island Beneath the Sea is the moving story of the intertwined lives of Tete and Valmorain, and of one woman's determination to find love amid loss, to offer humanity though her own has been battered, and to forge her own identity in the cruellest of circumstances.
PWBC rated this book a 7.1.
