October 2011 PW News
Dear Women of Northminster,
The 2011 Fall Gathering was held in September. We had a great turn out, great food and we all enjoyed the fellowship. We were pleased to have Mary Martin our District PW Moderator join us with greeting from the Atlanta Presbytery. It is such a great start to what we know will be a great year. We are hoping that this will be the year of the “Invitation.” We invite those of you who are not involved with PW to take part in whatever way works with your schedule. Also the PW CT would like to encourage those participating to personally invite someone to join them at a PW Event. There are various opportunities such as Circle meetings which meet on the third Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening of the month and the third Wednesday morning of the month. The Bible Study takes place at the circle meetings and is Confessing the Beatitudes by Margaret Aymer.
We have special dinners and fellowship events three times a year. The Fall Gathering which took place in September. The Christmas Gathering will be held December 6, 2011 and the Birthday Gathering May 8, 2012.
A great way to connect is to take part in the PW Annual Retreat which will take place at the Dillard House in the North Georgia Mountains April 20 - 22nd. Another place you may connect is by taking part in the PW Book Club which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month and there also is a weekly Bible Study that meets every Wednesday morning except for the week Circe meets. Please think about taking part in a PW event or all of the events. Check the NPC Website for all the details at http://www.northminster-atl.org/ministries/adult/presbyterian-women-bible-studies-and-activities/ or feel free to call me at (770)814-2406 for more information. We hope you will join us!
Your Sister in Christ,
Carol Coulter

Clergy Appreciation and Foster Care Support Drive
We are accepting donations toward Clergy Appreciation Month. We will be sending the pastors and staff to Ippolito’s for lunch. In addition, we will be giving them appreciation cards with Barnes and Noble gift certificates. There will be an envelope for collections in the PW box in the work room. If writing a check, please make it out to NPW and write “clergy appreciation” on the note line. All donations need to be made by Sunday October 16th.
October Mission will also be a clothing drive for Foster Care Support in conjunction with Mission and Outreach. FCS are collecting fall clothing and equipment. They are in desperate need for children’s new underwear and socks. They also get many requests for baby cribs, sheets and receiving blankets.
FCS appreciates all donations, but they are in particular need of the following:
Kids underwear – sizes 2 – 8
Boy’s and girl’s summer pajamas – sizes 24 months through size 16
Boy’s dress pants (khaki or navy) – sizes 24 months through size 12
Boy’s sneakers – size 6 through men’s
Kid’s toys with all pieces for age 7 and up. Put pieces in baggy and tape to toy.
Please place donations in the blue box in the Fireside Room during the entire month of October. Please contact Nancy Wade at 770-362-2207 or for any questions.

The September book selection for PWBC was the classic novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.
Francie Nolan, avid reader, penny-candy connoisseur, and adroit observer of human nature, has much to ponder in colorful, turn-of-the-century Brooklyn. She grows up with a sweet, tragic father, a severely realistic mother, and an aunt who gives her love too freely--to men, and to a brother who will always be the favored child. Francie learns early the meaning of hunger and the value of a penny. Like the Tree of Heaven that grows out of cement or through cellar gratings, resourceful Francie struggles against all odds to survive and thrive. Betty Smith's poignant, honest novel created a big stir when it was first published over 50 years ago. The book's humor and pathos ensured its place in the realm of classics--and in the hearts of readers, young and old.
PWBC thoroughly enjoyed reading this classic and rated it 8.1.

Bears for AIDS orphans
The Northminster knitters spent much of their knitting time this summer making these cute bears to send to the Mother Bear Project, an organization dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear. The simple gift of a hand-knit bear with a tag signed by the knitter has touched children with the message that they are unconditionally loved. It’s a fun project for knitters; easy enough for beginner knitters, uses up odds and ends of yarn leftovers, and lets us be creative in picking out colors and clothing style for the bears.
The knitting circle continues to meet on Wednesday nights during the BUZZ program, from 6:45 to 7:30 in the Fireside Room. All skill levels are welcome – if you want to learn to knit, we’ll do our best to set you up with some materials and get you started. For more information, contact .
