February 2012 PW News

Happy New Year!  Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team wants to accept Patrick’s challenge.   Patrick challenged the congregation to set at least one goal for 2012.   He encouraged each of us to identify one thing that we can do that will make a difference at NPC or in our community.  PW CT has committed to engaging young women and mothers to find their place at NPC within PW.  We plan to provide childcare at any on site PW event.  We encourage those women to let us know if they are interested and if they have suggestions regarding the programs or events that we offer.

We continue in 2012 to urge the women of PW to come to a Circle Meeting, the Bible Study or join the Book Club.  If your schedule doesn’t permit that level of commitment there are three fellowship gatherings throughout the year.  Another great way to connect and make life long friends is by attending PW’s annual retreat in Dillard, GA.  Sign up now on the PW bulletin board or the NPC website.  Hurry the deadline for the retreat is February 17th.   If you have any questions you can contact Carol Coulter at .net';h1022731970='comcast.net';document.write('' + linktext + ''); .

Your sister in Christ,

Carol Coulter

Book Club

PW Book Club

(Meets the 4th Tuesday of each month)

January’s book for PWBC was "In the Land of Invisible Women" by Dr. Qanta Ahmed.
This memoir is a journey into a complex world readers will find fascinating and at times repugnant. After being denied a visa to remain in the U.S., British-born Ahmed, a Muslim woman of Pakistani origin, takes advantage of an opportunity, before 9/11, to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia. She discovers her new environment is defined by schizophrenic contrasts that create an "absurd clamorous clash of modern and medieval.... It never became less arresting to behold." Ahmeda's introduction to her new environment is shocking. Her first patient is an elderly Bedouin woman. Though naked on the operating table, she still is required by custom to have her face concealed with a veil under which numerous hoses snake their way to hissing machines. Everyday life is laced with bizarre situations created by the rabid
puritanical orthodoxy that among other requirements forbids women to wear seat belts because it results in their breasts being more defined, and oppresses Saudi men as much as women by its archaic rules.

This was a very interesting and enjoyable book.  PWBC rated it 8.3.
