The National Presbytery Vote

You may have already heard through other news sources that as of May 10, a majority of presbyteries have voted to lift the ban on ordaining practicing homosexuals as clergy, elders, and deacons in the PUCSA.  I am forwarding to you a letter from the Executive Presbyter here in Atlanta.  He shares the wording of the old amendment, along with how that portion of our Book of Order will read now.

I don’t know how all of you feel about this issue.  I imagine that the feelings in our congregation are as varied as they are in our denomination.  Regardless, I would encourage you to do two things.

Pray for our denomination. The church has split before over issues such as slavery, literal interpretation, the role of women.  I hope that does not happen here.

Remember who we are. Last month, we delivered over two truck loads of supplies for people who have been affected by the tornados.  We did not ask who was receiving them, who they were  in love with, or how they feel about Jesus.  We have built Habitat Homes.  We have not asked the homeowners who they were voting for, whether they were Presbyterian or even Christian.  Recently, we heard from someone whose niece has taken in a homeless 12-year-old whose parents had been in a car accident.  We gathered clothes and other basic supplies for him.  We did not ask why they’re homeless, how much the State supports them, or why they aren’t working.  We respond in these ways because our faith in Christ compels us to demonstrate his love in the best way we know how.  I thank God every day that I have been called to a congregation that does that so readily.

For some this may seem like a time for great celebration.  For others it may cause great concern.  For others still, it may not seem like much of an issue at all.  Regardless, if you have any questions or concerns, or would like to discuss any of these developments, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Peace,

Patrick Day
