Sermon Questions.

I try not to write about specific events coming up in the life of the church.  I hope that what you read here is usually more than just an announcement. However, for the month of June, I am doing just that.

On June 13th, we will be doing something a little different in worship.  When you walk in, the Sanctuary will look the same, the bulletin will look the same, the music will sound the same.  However, when you get to the spot for the sermon you will see it will be blank.

Are there things about God that you have always been curious about, but didn’t know exactly how or where to ask that question?  Have you had a question about the Bible, but weren’t sure what to do with that question?  On June 13th, we want you to bring your questions to worship, and your pastoral staff will do our best to respond to them.

Now, there are some ground rules for this worship service.

1. Questions must be theological in nature.  This will not be a congregational meeting, and we will not discuss budgets, carpet colors, or lighting.  We are gathered for worship, and we want to be able to voice our questions regarding the Bible, our relationship with Christ, and our place in the world.

2. We will set the timer for 20 minutes.  When time has run out, we will move on with the rest of the service.

3.You may ask your question that morning, or if you would feel more comfortable, you may email me your question ahead of time.

We can’t guarantee we will get through every question, nor will we claim that we definitively speak for God.  Your pastors are people who have been called by God to study, to interpret, and to attempt to demonstrate God’s love in this world.  We are not like the Prophets of old, in whose ears, God clearly spoke.  I have never begun a sermon with, Thus says the Lord...”

However, we know that a life of faith creates as many ques- tions as it does answers.  Part of our job as a community of faith is to walk with each other as we wrestle with some of those questions.

We hope that this will be a meaningful, enjoyable, and up-lifting experience for all who are gathered here that day.

We always look forward to worshipping with you and look forward to hearing from you on the 13th.

Peace, Patrick
